I came across this statement at a writer’s workshop, that to be a good writer you do not have to read. However, my personal philosophy is more along the lines of what Stephen King said. “If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.” I am a firm believer of this philosophy, having written both academically and commercially over the last 8 years. Many people have argued with me over this, however I still hold my views on this subject as before.
I do not think that reading is essential to writing is a myth; I believe that is a fact. Why, well I argue my points below.
Writing style differs I agree
Like fingerprints, all writers have their own unique way of writing. So every person will have a different writing style than the other. While I will argue that your style should remain unique to yourself, however everyone recognises bull if you dish it out. If your writing has no substance, then it’s only a matter of time before you lose your reader. There is about that much bull your reader will take, and remember there are many other good writers out there.
So if you do not read, you will never have enough substance to put in your writing.
Reading promotes / provokes imagination
In our limited lives, where we live and operate in we come into contact with a handful of people. Very few of us get to go around and experience, the world around us. Reading, gives us access to other people’s lives, different perspectives, new experiences and most important of all inspires your mind and imagination. It is the fount of knowledge that will perpetually nourish your mind with new ideas and thoughts.
Reading helps shape your vocabulary and writing style
You are not born with a writing style; you develop one over the years. This development happens by you practising your writing. When you read other authors, it gives you a healthy respect for their writing style. You get a better grasp of your language and the vocabulary. It will introduce you to the limitations of writing, some techniques and craft, some poetry & imagination. Someone mentioned to me once, “Read for content, read for themes, and read for techniques.”
Reading as a writer is not about completing the book
If you are reading a book to just read it, then yes you will read it to finish it. However, as a writer you do not necessarily read a book to finish it. That is right! I have around 15 different articles that are floating in my folder which I have not read completely. In fact there is this book I have which I have been reading for 2 years. The point being, as a writer you may read a book not to finish but to get ideas.
A few changes to your schedule will make you a better writer. Remember; make reading a habit, irrespective of the subject matter. Discipline yourself to read something every day.
